How many states have energy storage policies?

Approximately 15 states have adopted some form of energy storage policy including procurement targets, regulatory adaption, demonstration programs, financial incentives, and/or consumer protections. Procurement targets require utilities to acquire a specified quantity of energy storage, typically by a specified deadline.

What are the different types of energy storage policy?

Approximately 16 states have adopted some form of energy storage policy, which broadly fall into the following categories: procurement targets, regulatory adaption, demonstration programs, financial incentives, and consumer protections. Below we give an overview of each of these energy storage policy categories.

Do fossil fuel power plants need storage?

It is observed in Fig. 7 that storage is needed only when 30% or more of the currently produced energy from fossils is substituted. When the entire energy produced by the fossil fuel power plants is substituted, the storage system capacity is substantial, at approximately 12 million m 3.
